Cannabis Terms & Terminology

BLUNT

A blunt is essentially a cannabis cigarette made by rolling finely ground marijuana flower inside a cigar wrap, often crafted from tobacco or cannabis leaves. It differs from a joint, which is rolled using traditional rolling papers, by its thicker composition and the possibility of containing both cannabis and tobacco.

BONG

A bong is a specialized water pipe designed for smoking cannabis flower. It consists of a base filled with water, a bowl where dry cannabis flower is placed, and a mouthpiece. The magic happens when you ignite the cannabis and inhale through the mouthpiece; the smoke takes a refreshing detour through the water, which cools and potentially smoothens the inhalation experience.

BUD

When enthusiasts affectionately refer to “bud,” they’re talking about the mature, harvested flower of the cannabis plant. These flower buds are the treasure troves of cannabinoids and are typically ground up and then smoked in various forms, such as joints or bowls.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD is the soothing, non-psychoactive compound in cannabis that’s celebrated for its potential therapeutic effects, including relaxation and relief from discomfort, minus the typical “high” associated with cannabis.

Cannabis

Also known as “marijuana” or colloquially as “weed,” cannabis is a versatile and psychoactive plant enjoyed both recreationally and for medicinal purposes. Inside this plant reside various cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, each with distinct effects.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids, the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant, include familiar ones like CBD (non-psychoactive) and THC (psychoactive). These compounds lead to diverse effects depending on the specific cannabinoid.

Cannabis TINCTURE

Tinctures are liquid extracts of cannabis, typically made by soaking cannabis flower or concentrates in alcohol. They are usually consumed sublingually (under the tongue) for quick absorption.

Concentrates

Concentrates are cannabis powerhouses, packed with a significantly higher THC content compared to traditional flower. They come in forms like shatter, wax, and oil, often used for the intense method known as “dabbing.”

DAB

“Dab” is the practice of enjoying highly concentrated cannabis oil or wax by vaporizing it on a hot surface and inhaling the resulting vapor. Dabbing is preferred by some due to its potency and efficiency.

DecarboxylatioN

Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis to activate its cannabinoids, such as converting THCA into THC. This is  typically through baking before consuming as an edible or through  vapourizing or combustion followed by inhalation.

Edibles

Edibles are delightful cannabis-infused treats, ranging from brownies to gummies, that sneak cannabinoids like THC or CBD into your system when consumed orally. They can deliver longer-lasting and more intense effects compared to smoking or vaping.

Hash

Hash, short for “hashish,” is a concentrated cannabis product created by extracting the trichomes (those resin-rich glands) from the cannabis plant. Hash can take on various forms, including dense resin or compressed blocks.

Hybrid

The term “hybrid” refers to cannabis strains born from the genetic mingling of different cannabis varieties. Hybrids can manifest a medley of characteristics inherited from their parent strains, offering a wide spectrum of effects and flavors.

INDICA

Indica strains are renowned for their calming and sedative effects, which often lead to full-body relaxation. They’re a favored choice for unwinding, especially before bedtime.

Joint

A joint is your classic hand-rolled cannabis cigarette. It’s traditionally filled with finely ground cannabis flower and wrapped in rolling papers. A distinction is made between joints and blunts, as joints typically lack tobacco.

Kush

“Kush” pays homage to a specific lineage of cannabis plants originating from the Hindu Kush mountains. These strains are celebrated for their distinct aroma and are often indica-dominant.

Kief

Kief is the treasure of trichomes, the resinous glands that separate from cannabis flower during grinding. It’s a fine, potent powder rich in cannabinoids, perfect for enhancing the potency of joints or bowls.

Landrace

In the realm of cannabis, we have landrace strains, which are like ancient heritage treasures. These cannabis varieties have evolved over centuries in specific geographic regions, remaining pure and untouched by hybridization. They are the ancestors of all cannabis plants.

MArijuana

When folks talk about “marijuana,” they’re typically referring to the female cannabis plant or its dried flowers, which are staples in recreational and medicinal cannabis use.

NUG

A “nug” is slang for a dried cannabis flower bud, ready for consumption.

OG

“OG” is an affectionate term encompassing a wide variety of cannabis strains, with its roots in the “Ocean Grown” Kush strain that gained popularity in Southern California.

PRE-ROLL

A pre-roll is a ready-to-use, pre-rolled cannabis joint or blunt, usually filled with ground cannabis. It’s perfect for on-the-go consumption.

Ruderalis

Cannabis ruderalis is one of the three primary subspecies of the cannabis plant, alongside indica and sativa. It is known for its smaller size. Unlike indica and sativa strains, which are primarily cultivated for their psychoactive effects and high THC content, ruderalis strains have lower THC levels and are less commonly grown for recreational or medicinal use. Ruderalis strains are valued for their unique autoflowering trait, which means they automatically transition from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage based on age rather than light cycles as with most other cannabis plants. This feature has made ruderalis strains useful in breeding and creating hybrid cannabis varieties.

Resin

On cannabis buds and leaves, there’s a gooey treasure known as resin. It’s that sticky substance where cannabinoids, terpenes, and other intriguing compounds reside, giving cannabis its unique qualities.

SATIVA

Sativa strains have risen to fame thanks to their invigorating and stimulating effects, known for boosting creativity, sociability, and delivering a cerebral buzz that awakens both mind and spirit.
